Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy :
The advantages of sleeve gastrectomy include:
- Average weight loss of more than 50 percent of excess body weight, and weight loss maintenance of more than 50 percent, similar to results of the gastric bypass
- Preserved stomach function because the nerves of the stomach and the outlet valve (pylorus) are not changed
- Less risk of developing vitamin and mineral deficiencies because the food you eat follows the normal digestive path
Is LSG a Good Choice for Me?
You should first know the risks and benefits of sleeve gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding and gastric bypass. For high-risk patients and patients with very high BMI’s, we discuss LSG as a first-stage procedure prior to gastric bypass. We are also conducting a clinical trial that includes sleeve gastrectomy for lower BMI patients with diabetes. Ultimately, the decision regarding which procedure to perform is based on each patient’s operative risk and their expectations and goals for surgical weight-loss.
Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass :
Laparoscopic Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and causes food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size. This reduces the amount of food you can eat at one time. Bypassing part of the intestine reduces how much food and nutrients are absorbed. This leads to weight loss. The operation, usually performed laparoscopically, involves making five to six small incisions in the abdomen through which a small scope connected to a video camera and surgical tools are inserted. The surgeon staples the top portion of the stomach so it is separated from the bottom to create a small stomach pouch.
This small pouch restricts food intake. A section of the small intestine called the jejunum is then attached to the small stomach pouch permitting food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum. This bypass reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs, called malabsorption.
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding :
Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is one of the least invasive operations available for obesity. It’s done with a few tiny abdominal cuts, instead of with one large cut. The surgeon puts instruments through the cuts. One of those instruments is a laparoscope, a tool with a tiny camera. The surgeon uses these tools to place a band around the top portion of the stomach, leaving a very small pouch available for food. The small pouch means that you feel full after eating only small amounts of food. This will help you lose weight. As its name suggests, the procedure can be adjusted and even reversed.
You will typically be able to go home the day after the procedure. Your diet will be mostly liquids and pureed food for 2 to 3 weeks. You will then slowly begin adding soft foods, then regular foods. You can return to a regular (but smaller) diet after about 6 weeks. As part of necessary lifestyle changes, you’ll need to eat smaller meals. You’ll need to chew your food slowly and repeatedly into a liquid slurry before swallowing. You also need to eat a healthy diet high in protein, vitamins, and minerals, and low in sugar.
LAGB does not make you lose weight suddenly. But it is a safer, less invasive procedure than other weight-loss surgery, including traditional gastric bypass. You’ll have to be prepared to eat appropriately and exercise. But you can expect long-term weight loss equaling one fourth to one third of your original weight.Because you’ll be at high risk for nutritional deficiencies for the rest of your life, you’ll need to take daily supplements as prescribed.
Gastric Balloon :
It is also used for people who are not suitable for other forms of weight loss surgery. The use of the Gastric Balloon may assist in reducing weight prior to surgery, therefore reducing the risks associated with surgical procedures on overweight patients.
Once in place, the balloon is filled with a saline and partially fill the stomach, helping a person to feel less hungry, so that they may consume smaller portions of food and experience similar satisfaction to what they would have previously experienced after consuming a larger meal.
While diet and exercise should always be your first line of defense when tackling fat, there are options for when you need a little extra help. Different than traditional liposuction, laser liposuction is an option that delivers a wave of laser light to stimulate collagen production to tighten the skin over subsequent months.
“Liposuction is still the gold standard for exercise-resistant areas such as the thighs,” says Reno, NV, plastic surgeon Tiffany McCormack, MD.
“Laser-assisted liposuction heats the skin from the bottom-most internal layer up to create a tightening effect,” says Boca Raton, FL, plastic surgeon Jason Pozner, MD.
Adds Montclair, NJ, plastic surgeon Dr. Barry DiBernardo, “Because the laser energy is delivered from below the skin, the outer skin isn’t subject to any direct energy. This enables us to deliver significantly more energy to target cells for stimulation and to markedly decrease the amount of.
Tummy Tuck :
Also known as abdominoplasty, removes excess fat and skin and, in most cases, restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.
Even individuals of otherwise normal body weight and proportion can develop an abdomen that protrudes or is loose and sagging. The most common causes of this include:
- Prior surgery
- Significant fluctuations in weight
After extreme weight loss or multiple pregnancies, stomach muscles can become distended, and diet and exercise alone cannot help. A tummy tuck surgically tightens weak muscles, while removing excess skin and fat, to flatten the abdomen. Tummy tuck is an easy procedure. It’s important for patients to realize that it is still a major operation, requiring one to five hours in the operating room, under general anesthesia.
Arm/Thigh Lift :
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that:
- Reduces excess sagging skin that droops downward
- Tightens and smoothes the underlying supportive tissue that defines the shape of the upper arm
- Reduces localized pockets of fat in the upper arm region
Fluctuations in weight, growing older, and heredity can cause your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance. This is a condition that cannot be corrected through exercise.
Arm lift surgery may be right for you if the underside of your upper arms are sagging or appear loose and full due to excess skin and fat.
Thigh lift surgery reshapes the thighs by reducing excess skin, and in some cases fat, resulting in smoother skin and better-proportioned contours of the thighs and lower body.
If fitness and weight loss efforts have not achieved your goals for a body that is firmer, more youthful-looking and more proportionate to your overall body image, a surgical lift may be right for you.
Facial Lift :
A facelift is a surgical method that removes excess facial skin to make the face appear younger. However, the aging face not only loses skin elasticity and develops looser skin, but also loses fat and muscle tone.
You might consider a face-lift if:
- Your facial skin has become loose
- Your cheeks are sagging
- The creases below your lower eyelids and around your lower lip and chin are becoming deeper
- You have excess skin hanging from your lower jaw line (jowls)
- You’ve lost definition and have excess fat in your neck
- Vertical bands of skin in your neck (platysmal bands) have become visible
Buttocks Lift :
A buttock lift (also known as belt lipectomy) improves and/or removes excess, sagging buttock and thigh skin that has developed as a result of weight loss, aging and gravity, or genetics. By raising and tightening the skin over the buttocks, a buttock lift makes the buttocks appear less saggy, dimpled or wrinkled.
The results of buttock lift surgery are visible almost immediately, but it may take several months for your final results to fully develop. A buttock lift does not add volume or shape to your existing buttocks, but it can give it a sleeker, more toned appearance.
Breast Augmentation :
Augmentation mammoplasty, or breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size, shape or fullness of a woman’s breasts. The surgeon places silicone, saline or alternative composite breast implants under the chest muscles or breast tissue.
- Enlarge breasts that are naturally small.
- Restore breast size and shape after pregnancy, weight loss or breastfeeding.
- Restore symmetry when the breasts are asymmetrical
- Restore the breast(s) after surgery as treatment for breast cancer or some other condition or event that affected the size and shape of the breast.
Rhinoplasty is surgery to repair or reshape the nose.
With local anesthesia, the nose and the area around it is numbed. You will probably be lightly sedated, but awake during the surgery (relaxed and not feeling pain). General anesthesia allows you to sleep through the operation.
A good candidate for nose-reshaping cosmetic surgery may:
- Have a nose that he or she feels is too large or too small in comparison with other facial features
- Have a bump on the bridge of the nose
- Have a wide nose
- Have a nasal tip that droops, protrudes, or is enlarged
- Have a bulbous tip
- Have nostrils that are excessively flared or pinched
- Have a nose that is crooked or off-center
- Have been injured so that the nose is asymmetrical
- Have problems breathing due to irregularities with internal nose structure (i.e. a deviated septum or related problems)
As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under your eyes. Blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids.
Surgery can be performed on either the upper and lower lids, or both.
Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.
Specifically, eyelid surgery can treat:
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
